Well another twitter pitch coming up and seems to be ongoing for every Friday for awhile. It a literary agency asking for queries. I think I will try to get ready for this one. This agency is a British firm with offices in New York and San Francisco. They are looking for clients and I’m not in the caliber of their clients; but if i don’t try I will never know. They are just not responding if they don’t care to read the material. So it will be silence. Better than a horrible rejection. Wish me luck!
Lily’s Lagniappe: The dog days of summer are upon us. This is when the threatening thunder storms dance across the mid-west and the south. Stay safe out there!
This begins a new week with the CBA class and working on 12 X 12 manuscript for July. Here’s hoping for a productive month and continuing to keep up with a manuscript a month for the rest of the year. The class I’m taking is helping me find ‘what ifs’ in my present manuscript. These are questions or taking the character on a journey that they may never take but will help you round out the personality of the character or find their fears. Either way it is a journey with your character that can make your book richer and better.
Lily’s Lagniappe: It is getting close to football season. The universities are getting ready for fall camp. Love college football and the anticipation is really beginning for the 2015 season. GEAUX TIGERS!!
Taking a class with Children’s Book Academy about writing PB. It has me re-examining the depth of my picture book main characters. It is overwhelming and challenging at the same time. Taking a part a manuscript with 600 words or less and adding emotion seems a daunting task but I am up for it. At work…
Lily’s Lagniappe: Please folks try not to strip the South of everything they hold dear. Not everything is based on the Civil War. It did not all come from slavery or the owning of slaves.
Good Morning! I am in Gatlinburg, TN this fine morning. I came to check things for my dad but I love the condo here. It’s quiet, it’s isolated, it’s located away from the maddening crowd and the traffic. Gatlinburg is a tourist city and the traffic in the summer is horrendous. It is very close to Pigeon Forge, another tourist city with scads of traffic. Now back to my writing, the picture book class has taken one of manuscripts and turned it on its proverbial ear. I have taken too much out at the beginning. I need to add some back in and still keep the word count low. Back to the drawing board…
Lily’s Lagniappe: Well, there are times in our lives as family members that we must make decisions about our parents. Yesterday four cousins of mine had to make the hard choice of putting one of their parents into a home. They all went together in a united front and it was as painless as it could be. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this adjustment period in their lives.
I am in a PB course with the Children’s Book Academy. It is with an editor and Mira Reisberg, renown children’s author. The class is called The Craft and Business of Picture Book Writing. The class is taught by her and an editor from Random House, Kelly Delaney. Each Monday is a webinar and also a lesson with homework. So far been able to keep up. The lessons aren’t very long but they are to make you think about your own writing. There are worksheets to help guide your thinking about your own manuscript. I keep you posted on how much benefit I get from this course. But I believe any class can help you in the long run. Still waiting to hear from the publisher about my little chapter book.
Lily’s Lagniappe: This time in Louisiana is very hot and humid. If you travel there be sure to hydrate and stay out of the sun as much as possible.
Well, Sunday Brooks and I awoke and went downstairs for breakfast. Brooks loves yogurt and pancakes but this morning he announced that he was going to eat scrambled eggs. Needless to say they didn’t taste as good as they looked, so Brooks didn’t like the eggs. But we ate some things for breakfast and visited with Cherish a bit then went to the pool. It was freezing!! We didn’t stay long. So we went to the room and watched Teen Titans. UGH! Well I guess it could be worse, not sure how but it could be worse. The picture books I am working on sauteed while I was with a five year old.
Lily’s Lagniappe: The football season is going to begin shortly. I’ve noticed recently in the news that there are football players behaving badly. LSU is not immune from this. One ballplayer has been dismissed from the team. There are three other ballplayers that are in the court system. I’m sure this happened at the time I went to school but it was kept out of the media. Now everyone knows about misbehaving ballplayers. Don’t you think this would encourage the players to behave better? It really hasn’t. Sad, very sad.
Heading to Charlottesville, VA to watch Brooks while Cherish moves into her new garage apartment. It will be yucky weather but it will not dampen our spirits about her moving into a new phase of her life. Doing what needs to be done to be a good mom. Brooks is a sweet, intelligent young boy with outlandish amounts of energy. Brooks and I are going swimming and to the movies. He goes with the flow better than most kids.
Lily’s Lagniappe: Well, this weekend is special to every American or at least should be. We declared to the Brits that we were an independent nation. We actually signed the document on the second but it passed the Continental Congress on the fourth. We the People of the United States, in order to form a perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. God Bless this Country that at times forgets why we are a nation.
Well, it’s official the summer is speeding by. Still waiting to here from the publisher I sent the chapter book too! I’m not discouraged just want to know if it is something they would like to print. I am also getting together an agent package which is still in the revision process. I am also taking a Children’s Book Academy class on writing Picture books. It is homework everyday but I get to read more picture books.
Lily’s Lagniappe: Love spending time with family and friends during the summer. Sharing stories, pictures, meals and special events with them. Make the time to do this in your life WITHOUT YOUR CELL PHONE!
This last weekend I put together a package to send to an agent. She is part of an agency in NY but she lives in Nashville. Hopefully she will like my little middle grade novel. I am revising the package to send to her and making a line edit of the entire manuscript. Here’s hoping that by my little character Austin will be a little guy she likes.
Lily’s Lagniappe: Well, LSU is putting out hype videos and hoping the good news from the basketball team getting top athletes from Louisiana. Will be an interesting year for Tiger sports.
Just finished a query, synopsis and first five pages to go to an agent. Sent it to my critique group first. Hopefully I will get it back in a timely manner. I’m not sure I really want an agent but it seems the only way to get a book contract. Trying this and hopefully will get back a request for the full manuscript or a nice rejection.
Lily’s Lagniappe: This time of year in Louisiana the horrible thunderstorms come. So not only having to watch the patterns of hurricanes but must also keep an eye on the radar for active areas for thunderstorms. Stay safe!
